History
Generations of Vermont families have called Bromley home since its founding in 1936, when Ralph Hutchinson and the Works Progress Administration (WPA) cut the “Bromley Run” on the West Side of the mountain. Fred Pabst Jr., of Pabst Blue Ribbon fame, incorporated Bromley as a ski area shortly thereafter, introducing lift service in 1938 via the J-Bar surface lift. Bromley would eventually be home to 5 J-Bars, and in 1958 became a chairlift ski area when the legendary 'Number-One Chairlift’ was built from base to summit.
Pabst would make Bromley the home of the world’s largest snowmaking system in 1966, adding 50 snowguns, 18 miles of snowmaking pipe, and a 9 million gallon reservoir.
With the rise of Snowboarding in the 80’s, Bromley became a local hub for the new sport along with Telemark skiing, thanks to the legendary Kåre Andersen and his Telemark Festival. The Blue Ribbon Quad, named after Pabst’s famous beer, ushered Bromley into the modern chairlift era in 1987. The installation of the Sun Mountain Express in 1997, Bromley entered the millennium a modern and vibrant ski area. Since then, Bromley has focused on green initiatives to keep the mountain sustainable and efficient, providing a home in the Green Mountains for future generations.
